CALL-OUT FOR APPLICATIONS
A new outdoor performance work.
About the venues:
The Civic is a small to mid-scale arts centre located in the Centre of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. We programme a varied and dynamic cross section of visual and performance art that includes theatre, dance, comedy, music, community arts, fine art exhibitions and a dedicated programme of professional children’s theatre.
Our vision is to provide extra-ordinary art and experiences to the people of Barnsley, Yorkshire and surrounding region. We aim to raise aspirations, challenge perceptions and inspire pride in our community
We are passionate about programming high quality, dynamic and engaging work for families and young people, and are keen to explore work that attracts and engages with families in a non- theatre environment.
Yorkshire Dance champions the value of dance and its development in Yorkshire. We do so by raising standards, increasing knowledge and understanding and fostering creativity and innovation.
We are committed to creating opportunities for emerging and established artists and practitioners to research, create and present new contemporary work on the small scale, and in communities, developing their skills, expertise and networks.
Yorkshire Dance is delighted to have been awarded funding by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to deliver Amplified, a two-year artist development programme. Amplified seeks to establish a strong sustainable network for artists, venues and festivals in Yorkshire / the North. We are interested in engaging new audiences in new ways and want to explore a dialogue between artists, audiences and programmers to establish contemporary dance audiences for contemporary practice of high quality.

What we are looking for:
The Civic, Barnsley and Yorkshire Dance (Amplified Programme)seek to commission a new outdoor performance work to be presented in a non- theatre environment/ every day spaces within Barnsley Town Centre and Leeds City Centre in Summer 2016
At this stage we are open to ideas and are seeking proposals from artists wanting to create a small scale movement piece that encourages the general public to engage when passing by. The work produced should demonstrate a distinct and clear aesthetic, or movement language, whilst being suitable for a wide range of audiences, including families.
A key priority for the Civic is to develop our visibility, to be a larger part of our local community, to reach new people and to introduce new work to our audiences through an exciting and diverse programme. Similarly Yorkshire Dance’s priorities include developing new audiences by creating work in non-conventional spaces in order to engage with those that wouldn’t normally have access to contemporary movement work. We are keen to receive proposals with high quality physicality alongside an artistic process that includes evidence of taking risks and challenging yourselves in the approach.
The work could be static or promenade in nature and will be presented during the annual Mayors Parade in Barnsley in July 2016 before transferring to Leeds City centre and our ambition would be to help the work tour beyond the 2 initial stages, including potentially 3 festivals across the North.
The call out is open to artists and companies from across the UK and we would be particularly keen to receive proposals from artists and companies based in our region.
What we can offer:
4 weeks R&D/ rehearsal space. The first two weeks to take place at Yorkshire Dance in Leeds w/c 1 February and w/c 8 February and the second at The Civic in Barnsley dates TBC
There is ambition for the work to be performed at 3 festivals across the North in June 2016
