WORKING CONDITIONS AND CONTRACTS

Working Conditions and Contracts

NASA campaigns on behalf of its members and on behalf of the Outdoor Arts sector in the UK

NASA would like to see universally accepted minimum conditions for street & outdoor artists at events, along the same lines as those backed by Equity and ITC for small scale touring companies. We ask all our members to add these to their contracts. It is understood that all companies have different needs and some of these conditions may not be applicable or necessary. Or you may have additional needs.

If you are having problems with, or would like to inform us of good or bad practice please do let us know. Although we are not a union, we do have a respected collective voice in the industry.

What we expect

  • Clean private lockable dressing room with table and chairs – close to performance area
  • Close access to clean toilet and sink (out of public view)
  • Free parking close to dressing room
  • Water and light refreshments
  • Hotel accommodation with parking – single rooms except when specified
  • Clear maps and information about the event
  • Compliance with company’s risk assessment
  • Contract with clear fee payment schedule
  • Strict adherence to agreed payment schedule

Insurance

Equity is the actors / variety performers union. It provides probably the cheapest Public Liability Insurance (pli) up to 10 Million pounds, for performers through their annual membership. Contracts generally require you to provide PLI. A copy of your Equity member card usually will suffice.
You must have performed in a certain number of shows to get a membership. An extension is possible to add fire performers, though this does not insure for Pyro use.
For show insurance – if your piece is of a larger scale, uses pyro, or has larger scale set and props and or uses audience volunteers, you may need it.

Hencilla Canworth provides the First Act insurance policy for Equity performers.

Stuart Cowie is the person to ask for as a contact for show / fire performer insurance enquiries.
From our understanding insurance costs have not extended to cover Covid-19 contract cancellations. These are being treated generally as Force Majeur, where both parties simply walk away from the contract.

Please see our Covid-19 Risk Assessment considerations document in the footer. These are being used as an industry standard in outdoor arts performances under Covid restrictions.

Equity is the actors / variety performers union. It provides one of the cheapest Public Liability Insurance (PLI) policies covering up to 10 Million pounds, for performers through their annual membership starting at £136. Contracts require you to provide PLI. A copy of your Equity member card usually will suffice along with your contract.

You must have performed in a certain number of shows to be eligible to obtain an Equity membership, although street performance / variety performances are less restrictive than theatre ones (you need to have performed less). An extension is possible to add Fire Performer insurance for ± £30 per year, though this does not insure for Pyrotechnic use.

For show insurance – if your piece is of a larger scale, uses pyro, or has larger scale set and props and or uses audience volunteers extensively, you will probably need it to fulfil contracts. This policy can be in the region of £5-600 per year.
